Burl's Worm Farm

Well, until I have a real farm I can start with a worm farm! I have wanted worms for about a year as a way to make something from our vegetable waste. Troy does not think our yard is big enough for compost piles but a worm bin is small :)

So, Saturday I called Rob, the local worm guy! He spent nearly an hour chatting with me about how to do it and showing me his small suburban homestead (garden beds, bee box, fruit trees, chickens and rabbits coming soon). I want all of these sweet people on our commune.

When I got home I tore old newspaper into strips and got it damp for the bedding material. Then in goes the worms on one end, in their mix of compost. And in goes some plant food scraps on the other end - to start molding, the worms actually eat the mold and bacteria that grow on the food scraps. They need some time to adjust to the transition and will probably begin eating in about a week when the food is good and moldy!

Any tips from the experienced ones?
